The
original Murphy's law says: "If anything can go wrong, it
will." In this Collection of Murphy's Computer Laws
the first and updated law is: "If nothing can go wrong, it will"
In
computer science there are some unwritten laws that are
the fruit of years of experience used for repairing the
disasters created by the PC. To know these laws makes life
easier and stress and ulcer free.
One of
the first laws that you have to know is: The first time
nothing will work. And probably also the second time.
Whatever
is the theme of your research, if it has to do with computer
science, the first time nothing will work correctly.
And
usually all will proceed without problems up to 5 o'clock
on Friday. Then everything will go wrong at the same time,
but it will look as if it is all right.
All
the emergency plans predisposed with the maximum foresight
and care, won't obviously work. In moments of great stress,
you realise that everything falls to pieces and the worst
happens when you least expect it.
Only
what doesn't exist is safe and only what doesn't exist doesn't
break. When you ask a question make sure you are able to
understand the answer and know that in computer science
to be crazy is not necessary, but it helps. Every solution
creates more problems than those it resolves.
Every imbecile has a brilliant idea to make things work
better and If a solution works well, start worrying.
However, to console you, when you have realized that the
correction was wrong, it will be too late.
To end, it helps to know that intelligence is the only quality
that cannot be increased with a silicone implant, otherwise
it would be Artificial Intelligence.
First
Axiom of Computing
If nothing
can go wrong, it will.
Corollary
In the most inopportune way at the least opportune moment.
With the least opportune person.
Third
Error’s Theory
Only after
making all the possible errors, it is the time to read the
instructions.
Moore's
Law
If
the system can break down, it will.
Second
Moore's Law
If there
is a possibility of only one thing going wrong, the one that
will go wrong is the one you didn't think existed.
Corollary
Everything
will go wrong at the same time in the same way.
Multimedia
Law
If there
is a possibility of only one thing going wrong, the one that
will go wrong is the one you didn't think existed.
Corollary
Everything
will go wrong at the same time in the same way.
Eraclito’s Law
It’s never
enough time to make things go well, but there is always time
for making things go badly.
First Law of Wizard of Oz
Any advance
in technology becomes a religion.
Corollaries
Any advanced
technology is indistinguishable from the magic.
Any
advance in magic is indistinguishable from the technology.
Any
advance in magic is indistinguishable from an illusion.
Fermi’s Paradox
The world
without miracles is incredible but it exists.
Corollary
A program
without bugs is incredible: in fact, it doesn't exist.
Van der Waals Second Force
In the
known universe, nothing travels faster than a system error.
Corollary
An expert is one who avoiding small errors creates disasters.
